immemorial (vampire AU)
( from here! )
"It is nothing but time," he says, perhaps too earnest in response to Wei Ying's teasing, but he has never been any other way. Even on occasions when he teases in turn - a phenomenon that has become more frequent over the years, due to Wei Ying's influence - Lan Zhan is nothing but honest in how he feels. "We have plenty of that."
They don't often speak of the Wen in detail, although they have spoken of Wei Ying's initial methods for preserving their lives. At first, Lan Zhan had been conflicted - the blood of a Pureblood vampire is potent, and not to be shared carelessly - but he did not question Wei Ying's judgment. Ultimately, he agrees that the Wen are victims and does not support their execution. His direct opposition is notable, for he used to be - his uncle occasionally laments - a model for upholding the standards and principles of their kind. But as the years unspool before him, he finds himself increasingly at odds with the Counsel, for more reasons than this.
In spite of everything, Lan Zhan helps where and when he can. He is a willing benefactor for this endeavor, as much as Wei Ying is willing to accept from him. But he is aware of his position in these matters, and it is a precarious one.
Wei Ying swings their hands between them and his smile is blinding. His joy is palpable, and Lan Zhan feels warmth spread from his chest to every inch of him. Long gone are the days where Wei Ying left him feeling outpaced, his steps leaden with duty and expectations. He practices gratitude daily, and is ever thankful for the convergence of paths that have led them to this point.
He does not respond verbally. Instead, he leans in to capture Wei Ying's lips with his own - the kiss is imbued with tenderness, and finality, like the wax seal on a letter. He loves how forever sounds from Wei Ying's mouth.

—Which, yes, did happen, naturally so, but it wasn't at all the sole and core reason for his actions. The care he felt towards them was genuine. Lan Zhan would be the first to recognize this, too.
For now, all such matters are set aside. Forgotten, even. Six months is nothing at all between the two of them, yet it stretched out tediously slower by the day. He can only ever long for Lan Zhan.
Wei Ying further laces their fingers together in a solid hold as he returns the kiss with a warm and quieted exhale. He doesn't need to see to know where they're moving, but for the moment keeps his gaze upon Lan Zhan. When his eyes do slip shut, Wei Ying nudges against him, deeply breathing him in. His free hand lifts to slip around to the nape of Lan Zhan's neck, feeling the warmth of his skin and the sensation of his hair beneath his fingers.
Somehow, he's able to keep from rushing them.
